Some dot paintings can feel flat when the whole image is completed in one colour.

The shape is there, but the shadows, highlights and focal points can feel quieter than they should. Paint By Dots is introducing selected three colour designs using black, blue and gold markers to create stronger contrast, clearer depth and a more finished artwork.

What has changed?

Selected Paint By Dots kits are being updated from single colour completion to a three colour sequence using black, blue and gold markers. The aim is simple: more contrast, clearer detail and a finished piece that feels more dimensional on the wall.

The basic process stays calm and easy to follow. You still work on a printed dot canvas, fill one section at a time and watch the image slowly appear. The difference is that each colour now has a clear visual role.

Black for structure

Black anchors the design, defines the main lines and gives the artwork its shape.

Blue for depth

Blue is used as a depth tone for shadow, background and areas that should visually recede.

Gold for detail

Gold is added last to bring warmth, contrast and focus to selected areas of the artwork.

The problem: single colour dot paintings can feel too flat

A single colour dot painting can be calm, graphic and beautiful. But some designs need more visual separation. Faces, animals, architecture, landscapes and detailed backgrounds often benefit from a stronger distinction between structure, shadow and highlight.

That is the problem this update is designed to solve. The goal is not to make dot painting more complicated. The goal is to make the final artwork feel more complete while keeping the process simple.

The benefit in one sentence

Black gives the image structure, blue adds visual depth and gold creates the finishing highlights that make the artwork feel intentional.

How black, blue and gold work together

Black establishes the structure. It defines the main lines, outlines and important areas of the design. On the canvas, black gives the artwork its foundation.

Blue creates shadow and distance. It is used where the artwork needs depth, softness or background separation. The blue is intended as a depth tone, not a bright sky blue.

Gold adds warmth and focus. It is used last, on the marked focal areas, to lift the finished artwork and create contrast against the darker tones.

For Google Merchant visibility, colour availability should always match the individual product page. Only products that genuinely include the three colour system should show black, blue and gold as included colours.

How to use the three colours

The three colours are designed to be used in a simple sequence. You do not need to guess the order. Start with the structure, move into the depth areas, then finish with the highlights.

  1. Stage 1: black, about 40% of the work. Begin with the black marker and complete the areas marked for structure and outline.
  2. Stage 2: blue, about 35% of the work. Move to the blue marker and use it for areas marked as shadow, background or visual depth.
  3. Stage 3: gold, about 25% of the work. Finish with the gold marker on selected focal points and warm detail areas.

A medium design usually takes around 8 to 12 hours to complete, depending on size, detail level and your pace.

Why we made this change

Customer feedback and internal studio testing showed a clear pattern: when a design included structure, shadow and highlight, the finished artwork felt more complete. Single colour pieces are still beautiful, but many customers wanted more depth without making the process difficult.

This update is a quality decision. It is not about adding unnecessary complexity. It is about helping selected designs feel more finished, more layered and more suitable for display.

Studio note

Our aim is always to keep dot painting calm from the first step. The three colour system is only useful when it makes the result better without making the experience feel busy. That is why colour availability should be shown design by design, not assumed across every kit.

Materials and sustainability

  • Gold, black and blue marker variants should be explicitly listed on eligible product pages.
  • The inks are intended to be non toxic and water resistant once dry, subject to final supplier confirmation.
  • Updated kits keep the same printed canvas quality and marker tip precision.
  • Packaging remains recyclable where local recycling systems accept the material.
  • Product pages should show colour availability so Google Merchant listings stay consistent with the product customers receive.

Who this update is best for

The three colour system is especially useful for customers who want a finished piece that feels more like display art than a simple pattern. It works well for animal designs, portraits, architectural scenes, abstract artwork and custom photo dot painting where depth matters.

Beginner friendly designs should continue to be clearly marked, so new customers can choose a kit that matches their pace and confidence level.

Next steps

Start with the designs where colour depth matters most. If you are new to dot painting, choose a beginner friendly kit first. If you want something more personal, a custom photo dot painting can be the better next step.

Frequently asked questions about the new dot painting colours

Do all Paint By Dots kits include gold, black and blue?

No. Colour availability should be checked on each product page. New and updated three colour designs will list gold, black and blue clearly.

Will the price change for three colour kits?

The current product page price always applies. If a kit includes gold, black and blue, that should be shown on the product page before purchase.

Does blue ink behave differently from black?

No. The aim is for the markers to have the same flow, drying time and handling. The difference is the colour role inside the artwork.

Can I skip one of the colours?

Yes. You can adapt the sequence, but the full black, blue and gold order gives the strongest depth effect.

When will the new colours be available?

New eligible designs begin from November 2025, with selected existing designs rolling through Q1 2026. Check the product page for the latest availability.

Are the markers safe to use?

The updated markers are intended to use non toxic acrylic based ink. Always check the final product specification on the product page before purchase.

Are these colours suitable for custom photo dot painting?

Selected custom photo designs may be suitable for the three colour system, especially where the image benefits from structure, shadow and highlight. Availability should be confirmed on the custom photo product page.
